Introducing Tag #Stories

Get to know the team and how they got into the games industry in a role they love

Welcome to a new series where we chat to some of our team about their #Stories, how they got into the games industry and why they wanted to explore their chosen career paths.

Scott Adamson, Dungeon & Zone Designer

“I've always enjoyed playing video games. As a kid I got a PS1 for my 5th birthday and ever since then I've spent more than 20 years glued to a screen, enjoying the impressive developments in consoles and games over the years.”

When I finished school, I knew I wanted to work in the digital industry. I eventually found my way into Dundee and Angus College's Game Development course and transitioned from there to Abertay University to study Game Design.

Whilst at University I landed my first industry job, and I knew that the games industry was where I wanted to be.

Since starting in October 2021 as a Zone and Dungeon Designer with Tag Games I've been able to work with some amazingly experienced developers from all over the world while being a part of the industry which excited a younger me with his old PS1 back in the day!”

Ross McWilliam, Producer

“My first console was a Nintendo 64, I was obsessed with Mario and Zelda and played those games countless times.

Although I loved the gameplay, the music has always been really important to me and an appreciation for the music in those games with a special mention to Mystical Ninja (it doesn’t get enough credit) are what eventually led me into a career in the games industry.

I studied Sound Production at Abertay University and through this I met friends who would give me my first games industry experience producing music and sound effects for their products.

Since joining Tag I have progressed from a QA temp to Producer and love working with the extremely creative and intelligent people in the team. I have been at Tag for over 6 years and have learned a massive amount over that time and met some great people.

Even at a young age, Gameboy in hand, I wanted to create games but I never knew quite how to.”

Ryan Mitchell, Zone & Quest Designer

“I scoured the internet and found myself on game engines, where I decided I'd try to create maps for games. This hobby continued throughout my teenage years, where I also picked up some 2D animation experience for fun, but I never felt that I was as strong in art as I wanted to be.

This is where the Game Designer role caught my attention, and of all places, my hometown of Dundee, Scotland had courses on just the thing! Starting in Dundee and Angus College's Game Development course, and moving onto the Game Design and Production Management course at Abertay University allowed me to get my foot into the industry door.

This year marks 6 years of industry experience for me. I'm very happy to have started this year with Tag Games as a Zones and Quest Designer. I've been mesmerised by all of the fantastically talented people I've got to work with over the past few months, and I cannot wait to grow and learn more from them!”

Calum Murray, Level Artist

“I've loved playing games for 30 years, ever since my Dad brought home an Atari ST 520. It wouldn't be until 1999 however (with the advancement of 3D environments), that I knew that making games was what I wanted to do with my life, to create experiences for people to explore and be entertained by.

Getting to the point where I have achieved becoming a Level Artist at Tag, was not an easy journey. Life and work kept dragging me in directions other than the way I wanted to go. Although I have 13 years of professional experience, each job would require me to learn new but unrelated and different skill sets. It's always fun to learn something new but in an industry that was becoming ever more specialised every year I had been led too far down the path of "Jack of all trades, Master of none".

Luckily a position at Tag opened up that took all the best bits of the things I had learned over time and condensed them into a single role. Finally, after 21 years since deciding what I wanted to do with my life, I have landed my dream job.

There's so much experience and love for games here and a mutual respect for each other, working at Tag is the most fulfilling experience.”
